The Christmas Customs Data Is Confusing

If you look at one number, you might panic. China’s customs export data for Christmas goods (HS code 95051000) has been sliding—from $8.6 billion in 2021 down to $5.2 billion in 2025. The traditional Christmas decoration business is shrinking.

But look at another number and you’ll see a completely different story. Yiwu customs reported that Christmas product exports hit 2.14 billion yuan in the first half of 2026, up 20.4% year over year. For the first three quarters, that number reached 5.17 billion yuan, up 22.9%. Exports to the EU jumped 45%.

So the overall pie is cooling, but the manufacturing hubs that serve the personalized gift market are running hot. That gap tells you exactly where to put your money for Christmas 2026.

Where the Growth Is Hiding

The old model was simple: sell Christmas decorations. The new model is more nuanced: sell personalized memories that happen to be Christmas‑themed.

The global personalized gifts market is around $40 billion in 2026, growing at 8.5% to 10.2% annually—nearly three times the rate of the broader gift market. The categories that are really taking off are photos and keepsakes, growing 50% to 70% year over year. Basic “name on a mug” products? Flat. No growth.

Buyer behavior in Yiwu confirms this. Foreign buyers used to walk into a shop and ask “How much?” Now they ask “Do you have anything new?” Interactive products with light and sound—a snow‑spraying ornament, a music‑playing figurine—moved nearly 100,000 units for one supplier alone. AI Christmas trees, AI Santa figures, animated butterflies with mechanical wings—these are the new growth drivers.

For sublimation and DTF printers, the message is clear: stock products that can be personalized, not just products that look festive.

Your Priority Stocking List

Photo keepsakes first. Blank photo frame ornaments, MDF photo panels, acrylic ornaments ready for sublimation. The point isn’t the Christmas tree shape—it’s the photo the customer prints on it. Customs records already show bulk shipments of “DIY plastic 60mm ball ornaments” clearly labeled for personalization. The repeat purchase logic is strong: a family might buy one finished ornament, but they’ll buy one for each child and each pet.

Light‑up and interactive blanks second. Static products are slowing down. Light and motion are selling. For sublimation printers, this means prioritizing LED ornament bases, photo‑insert light boxes, and acrylic lamp panels that accept heat‑transfer designs. Customers aren’t buying a lamp—they’re buying “my family photo is glowing on the tree.”

Pet memorial products third. Personalized pet products are one of the fastest‑growing subcategories in 2026. Pet Christmas ornaments, pet portrait coasters, paw print memorial plaques. Low customization barrier, high emotional premium. Both soft materials (felt, fabric) and hard materials (ceramic, metal) work for sublimation.

One Risk You Can’t Ignore

The customs data also delivers a warning: as traditional decoration exports shrink, competition is crowding into the “personalized” lane. When everyone is selling photo ornaments and light‑up blanks, simply having blank products isn’t enough. What buyers are actually looking for is consistent color reproduction—photo‑based customization has far less tolerance for color shift than ordinary decorations. If your ICC profiles are off, your return rate will eat your margin.

That’s why stocking decisions shouldn’t stop at the blanks themselves. Batch consistency of sublimation ink, cold‑peel performance of DTF film, transfer parameters for different blank materials—these “invisible consumables” determine whether your Christmas season is profitable or painful. The ordering window is narrow. One color disaster can wipe out a quarter’s profit.

The final takeaway from the customs data is simple: the best‑selling customized products this Christmas won’t be the ones that look the most like Christmas. They’ll be the ones that look the most like the buyer. Rearrange your stocking list around that logic. As for the shelves still full of traditional ornaments and static figurines? The data has already spoken. Their best days are behind them.
